Pouting artsy wanker is what you get when you are trying not to put a stupid face.
(You also skipped the tagger, the nerd, the open-faced happy-go-lucky environmentalist, the schnoz, the serial-killer, the cheeky gay boy and the elf, all formally accepted looks for ruby on rails)

pds on February 02, 2006 07:28 sez:

I can see the tagline now:

RoR: with all the time you save, you can also NOT shave! Or buy some designer reading glasses! Or style your hair! etc.

Haacked on February 02, 2006 08:53 sez:

Exactly which word was the profanity? I can never understand this british crazy talk.

;)

leon on February 02, 2006 16:46 sez:

sorry 'Haacked' -- the profane word was 'wanker' which is a broadly accepted synonym for 'political science student'

mattie on February 02, 2006 17:48 sez:

Hey... does Dr. Spock's love child feature as another category???

The guy called Tobias at the bottom of the page bears a striking resemblance...

lb on February 02, 2006 17:51 sez:

funny you should say that matt, cause i've had a look at the way RoR works: and it actually instigates a vulcan mind-meld with the developer.

It's a good way to get the program written quickly, but it is fatal in one out of five cases.

Gunn on February 08, 2006 17:57 sez:

> "Pouting artsy wanker is what you get when you are trying not to put a stupid face."

Yes! I've pulled this kind of face in photos before and I am definitely not an artist. Or maybe I am and didn't realise.

Piotr Usewicz on February 11, 2006 14:09 sez:

heh :)

Mr eel on February 11, 2006 16:51 sez:

To be a .NET programmer you have to be a bitter wet knob-end, bitching because everyone else is getting the attention?

Of course not. There are plenty of fine .NET programmers who have found a better target for their angst. Not you unfortunately.

Jason on February 11, 2006 20:13 sez:

Artists looking artsy? omg, no way

lb on February 12, 2006 14:56 sez:

Yeh Jason, Mr Eel, sorry about picking on those photos. I know Marcel has linked to this entry, and i hope he isn't too offended.

RoR is truly excellent, and I don't mean to dismiss or insult the community in general. That particular page with the photos on it seems quite elitist and egotistical: that' all I'm trying to say. Hopefully the criticism will be taken in the right way.

cheers
lb

lb, don't forget that these people are European. So they aren't being 'pretentious' in pulling these faces: they're not 'pretending', they're serious.

If they were American college kids, then you'd be right: they would be acting very pretentious. But Europeans are allowed to pull that kind of face. It isn't ironic, it's honest.

Just like how French people are allowed to wear berets without looking like idiots.

Lol, just stay on .NET man..

Yeah, I feel _so_ much more comfortable with a fat red-faced guy in a suit giving me the typical Anglo-American ear-to-ear fake smile.
I don't mean to dismiss or insult people of Anglo-American heritage in general either, btw.

meta on April 03, 2006 04:28 sez:

'pouting artsy wanker'... Yup, and while we're at it, Open Source is *almost* communism.

In my childhood, the dumber kids always picked on the looks of the smarter ones when they came short of arguments, but hey, that's my perception, and I'm European, so I may be a bit of a wierdo.

I'm sorry, but I just can't see what's wrong with these pictures, but then again, I don't have any pics of Hejlsberg or Gosling - no offence intended to these great people - or any other SW heros around, so I wouldn't know the standards...

Well I better not hold you guys from work; you probably have tons of boiler-plate code to write, security issues to attend to and best practice designs to ditch because of deadline pressure. So I'll just end with a 'keep your eyes on the ball', and get back to work, which may or may not be .Net today.

Hakenkreuz on June 15, 2006 07:32 sez:

Does the master race really need to come into the discussion? I thought it was code and not skin tone and facial bravado that drove this community..

Nostok on June 29, 2006 14:03 sez:

Funny... just funny - nothing more nothing less. Lighten up guys you are all wankers at heart just like me.

Where the hell are *you* from!?

Matt Blodgett on November 11, 2006 20:18 sez:

Thank you for writing what I've been thinking for months. My opinion of RoR in general was irreversibly lowered the day I first saw that page on the RoR website.

Get a grip, people.

I would rather work with these guys than someone who looked like Bill Gates. The way you dress reflects the way you think and approach problems.

These guys are meticulous about webdesign and have produced the (arguably) world's best MVC web framework.

If M$ and .NET are not winning any design awards, it's not the fault of the RoR guys.
