I actually do the same thing to avoid goofing off at work, which can be challenging if it is a slow work day. Host file work until...it gets easier it to switch/edit the hosts file. Right now I have a batch file that makes the switch from a goof to work-mode (fun sites point to 0.0.0.0) host file. The batch file made goofing off worse. I haven't tried it but I got the idea reading this--a scheduled task that would put the host file back to the work file every 15 or so minutes. Even better would be some spurious steps like a password or a 5 minute wait before the switch happens.

good stuff matthew.

i was thinking about this today. what if instead of 0.0.0.0 we used a 127.0.0.1, where a local website is running that says

"Do you really want to access [facebook]?

For 1 minute, 5 minutes or 10?"
and there's a captcha code you have to type in -- a longer amount of time requires a longer captcha code.

And there's charts showing you how often you goof off.

if you don't know how to find this file then maybe you shouldn't be messing with your hosts file.

but you can open notepad (under accessories) and choose open file. Then paste "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" into the name of the file to open.

Hopefully though you won't have permission to do this and the computer will stop you before you truly harm yourself.

most routers have time restrictions and domain name blocking capabilities now, if you're gonna be using the HOSTS file, I also would suggest using these if applicable.

If you have a wireless network for laptops it makes sense to have the same blocks on your wired and wireless networks, hint hint.

The Mikeness on November 27, 2008 11:13 sez:

As for restricting access to the file, non-admin users shouldnt be able to modify this file, so if you can take away their admin access that would prevent someone from tampering with it.

If you have Active Directory on the system you have more fine grained control, like you could make the domain admin user(s) be the only ones with write access to the file, and other admins or power users, etc, have no access.

the trick is to copy the file to another location, change it there, and then copy it back to the "etc" folder. (you'll get prompted to confirm at that point)

@fatima
notepad, by default, will add a ".txt" extension onto a file.

So it may have saved the file as
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.txt

You need to rename that file to:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

(i.e., remove the extension)

Rosanna on April 15, 2009 17:26 sez:

This is so EASY really, you don't have to fiddle about with code or system files. You can literally go to your internet options and add facebook to the "blocked content" list. If you are using Opera, like me, this does not work but you can easily go to:

"Tools > Advanced > Blocked Content" in the browser and simply add it to that list.

Using some sort of time delay would be pretty useless-either have some self control or just unblock it when your finished working.

You guys are over-complicating things, if you're that bothered, LEAVE THE DAMN SITE!!

blog.facebook.com
login.facebook.com

Each of the sites must be blocked, even so... the Host File does not exactly "block" the website, but rather redirects the command to the local host or elsewhere.

If www.facebook.com line was added the hosts file, and I googled lets say "Facebook" and clicked on one of the results... I can still login.

Hosts isnt a permanant fix, only to those that use a computer and dont know the existance of search engines (Google.com etc...)

right on Nicollepetersen This should be used as an exercise in denying impulsion/compulsions. if they would MAKE themselves not spend too much time on these things, and redirect their efforts elsewhere- it will become part of their nature and they will be more productive! it's like when in a checkout line and being impatient because someone writes a check and doesn't fill it out first. if you tell yourself the delay happened so you don't get wrecked while pulling from the parking lot- it becomes easier. I have practiced these sort of techniques for years, and it has helped immensely. I found this page, as a business that provides support services, while searching for a recommended block list to increase productivity for my clients. I just had to drop my 3 cents... if these folks are having issues, especially on personal time, what happens when they are at work?? They get paid to play... Have not started with facebook, don't care for user policies.

Thank you for posting this about the local hosts file, it's a great self-discipline reminder.

This is a great article! I have also found this program to be useful if you're on Windows. It's called StopDistractions and lets you block distracting websites like Facebook and Twitter!

Worth a download!

Social Network Controller (SNC) is an excellent program to lock Facebook and other social networks (youtube, twitter, etc.) in an easy manner. I have been using it and it allows me to control the time that my employees spend using social networks. You can download the program from the following URL: http://www.socialnetworkcontroller.com/index.php?lang=en

disable cookies to facebook id already figured that.. but if u know enough to get into trouble... an easy workaround.. content advisor id never used and seems easy as (win 7)to the guy that said www.www.(etc),facebook.com.. omg that actually works.. but i added *.facebook.com and have beaten that. u can add as many wwwwws ya want by adding the *.facebook.com to never allow ya cant get on. commodore 64 basic to the rescue! lol

mook on June 28, 2011 10:14 sez:

ps for those who didnt have the "privillige" to tinker with a 64, "*" means anything/everything, so in theory it should block anything with any prefix from lite/https/www.www facebook.com, anyone whom corrects me on this must be a real geek and can/could teach me a thing or 2.. just dont turn me into anymore geek than i am already, k?
