Yep, or yup, depending on where abouts you happen to hail from, means just about anything you want it to. Your three examples are probably the top three forms of usage.

I think that you forgot the following though:

"I hear you talking. I'm not actually listening but I thought that I would fill the empty spaces in your monologue just to keep a flow going. Please do not construe this as meaning that I have agreed to wear a puffy pirate shirt in public."

Inflection is everything.

If your from my neck o'the woods, it is:

Ayuh... (pronounced i - yuh).

Something to do with too many folks from Canada cross-breeding with folks from Maine.

"Yep, or yup, depending on where abouts you happen to hail from, means just about anything you want it to."

so that means all 3 above are true?

and what the fuck mean "wtf"?

daniel on February 21, 2007 06:40 sez:

Hey, I thought yep means yes..
the 3th version is really friendfully.
I have got relatives in the USA,and they told me yep means yes.But why did they do it,if its not means yes.Im confused.
You know,I'm from europe, and here in the schools, the teachers talk about just the verbs, and etc,not about "slang"

When I hear "yep," I think the person saying it is an imbecile. Usually uneducated or undisciplined people say yep or more commonly "yep yep yep."

Usually it means they are not listening because their minds are going a million miles per hour contemplating garbage and so the yep is their placeholder in the conversation.

It's also a bit dismissive.

Zack on September 26, 2009 21:48 sez:

i thougt yup meant yea

Lucas on December 31, 2009 05:06 sez:

Pretty much a lazy form of "yes".

Maybe could be use just like "Yes, it is" or "Correct", but in a more informal, somewhat lazy way, sometimes a bit sarcastic.

"So, he won the Nobel Peace Prize after sending more soldiers to Afghanistan...?"

"Yep/Yup."

Tim on January 05, 2010 00:42 sez:

Yep that's what most people say but only after someone else gives me a second Opinion Its cool, everything fine or say anything to make me laugh or puke But I know I don't say that because It makes no sense but theirs always lighta t the end of the tunnel, I put it.

damn word.., means yes

Jamie on December 20, 2011 20:52 sez:

I'm having a hard time understanding "yep" when it's not used in an actual conversation.

It bothers me when I hear it from someone walking behind me...I know it's weird...I thought maybe they're in their own thoughts or they have nothing better to say because no one's talking to them in that moment.

What do you think about my situation?

mikeyoyo on March 17, 2012 22:36 sez:

it means "yes" --- that is all.

Is it a combination of yes please shortened and run together .... Just a thought

Rod on November 23, 2015 06:47 sez:

Kate, that's going a bit too far.

KD on April 21, 2016 12:19 sez:

It's rude & dismissing. Also lazy & rude. Have a 10 sec conversation stupid.

Pete on January 30, 2017 10:10 sez:

When you think about it!! Sarcastic way of telling someone they are right!!!

hannah on April 12, 2017 02:41 sez:

Yes sounds too formal in certain situations, so by saying yep it is agreeing with you as well as not being so uptight. For example i work in a fast paced customer service bakery. I say Yep instead of yes most times when i hand over a pie or cash etc. "can i please have sauce?" i'd say "yep! no worries :D" a straight up Yes would sound brunt..

Barry on August 16, 2017 04:02 sez:

Yep is dismissive, abrupt and in my opinion quite rude

Kathy on November 01, 2017 11:16 sez:

When it is said after every other word in your conversation, I take it as saying "I KNOW!!!" It is used very rudely!!!! When asked a question I will reply with a YEP!!!

John on November 19, 2017 09:21 sez:

I find the reply "YEP" in text form particularly rude and dismissive. For example, when someone tells you something or asks you something in text form, and you simply answer with a single word "YEP", I take it that they are not really that interested in what you are saying or asking, and want to give you the impression that they don't really have time for you, or don't really want to replying with any more words than they have to, so they decide to reply with only a "YEP".

Shanna on September 19, 2018 22:35 sez:

It is the most frustrating thing for me that people do :(

Gavin on May 26, 2019 08:47 sez:

Yep!

Emily on June 27, 2021 19:20 sez:

What about yep with a smiley emoji afterwards? Is that still dismissive or an attempt to be friendly?

Bitchen Kitten on July 13, 2021 23:34 sez:

It hurts my feelings in text maybe 🤔 they don’t mean to but I feel like they are saying ‘yep’ because it’s like “ of course dumbass”

Capt Mark on September 13, 2021 09:47 sez:

Every time I say "Good morning!" to my neighbor, his only reply is, "yep". It's rude and irritating to the point where I don't bother talk to him anymore.
